Planet Granite was founded in 1994 with the simple idea that climbers, this small fringe group of athletes, deserved a world-class facility with sport-specific training.
At the time, there were virtually no gyms in the United States that provided a one-stop shop for climbing, yoga and fitness. Furthermore, the systems and infrastructure needed for a climbing specific gym with overhanging walls, mechanized system boards, and textured boulders did not exist.
Our founder, Micky Lloyd (seen at left), has helped design and build our facilities. That “do-it-yourself” culture continues to this day and is evident in many features found throughout our gyms.
Since its founding Planet Granite has grown to operate some of the largest and best-known climbing gyms in the country. Each time we build a new facility, we incorporate what we have learned and try to raise the bar to provide the best climbing terrain and training tools to the communities in which we work. We have four locations: San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Belmont and Portland.
OUR MISSION & VALUES
Our Mission: Provide the best possible climbing, yoga, & fitness experience for everyone, be ambassadors for the outdoors, and give back to our communities.
Fueled by Passion
Since opening our doors in 1994, we have been inspired by passion. We dreamed of building a different kind of climbing gym, one that doesn’t just offer the best climbing, yoga and fitness, but also has that something else.
At Planet Granite, this means creating a space for people to congregate and pursue their passions. To inspire each other to push harder, to sweat more, and to laugh more. Our values reflect what all of us who work here are passionate about – working hard, and playing harder.
But it isn’t just our crazy love of climbing vertical walls that defines us, at the core of who we are, exists a belief that we have a responsibility as members of our communities, and as outdoor enthusiasts, to help protect the spaces we love and to share it with underserved communities that may not have easy access to these special places.
To define who we are and why we do what we do, we created our core values: the foundation upon which we operate and that guide us in our everyday decisions.
We are valued members of an inspired team contributing together to a worthy goal. WE are better together.
Our spaces always evolve & adapt. We alter business practices based on feedback and embrace new trends while staying true to our core: that we are athletes and enthusiasts who seek engaging and active experiences that help us live our lives to their fullest.
Love it. Live it. Share it!
We love what we do! We’re passionate and most of all, we share our psych and expertise with our community. #sharethepsych
Where everyone knows your name.
Our diverse communities are shaped by shared experiences, self-discoveries and our insane drive to train harder, climb harder and play harder. And that’s regardless of age, ability, gender or race. We welcome everyone and will cheer you on whether it’s your first time or your 1000th. #belikeCheers
Honesty & Integrity.
We act with honesty & integrity. We are open to new ideas and critical feedback. Being direct and providing candid, constructive feedback enables all of us to be better.
We have a responsibility to protect what we love and a passion to share it with everyone. For us, this means supporting local crag access, working with organizations to get under-resourced youth outside and to take a stand for what we believe in. Learn more here
Life isn’t all about meetings and seriousness. It’s being able to laugh at yourself, overcoming your fears, and doing the things you love to do all while striving to be the best. It’s about competing with your friends because it pushes you to be better and makes it a hell of a lot more fun. It’s about waking up at 5am for dawn patrol and racing to work to shower before your 9am shift. It’s about training every day and loving feeling wrecked. To be part of PG is to be @#%! awesome. #bfa
Planet Granite gives back to our community in three primary areas: climbing, community and the environment.
Over the past six years we have made financial contributions totaling more than $500,000 to a dozen non-profits that fall within this framework.
Some of those include Outward Bound, Yosemite Conservancy, Big City Mountaineers, and the Access Fund. Many of them are focused on bringing underserved populations to our sport and the outdoors.
We're about making a difference:
Finally, Planet Granite believes in setting an example. As a company, we have always maintained the highest environmental standards when designing and operating our gyms. That commitment includes integrating large garage doors in the facilities that allow for passive ventilation, reducing our need for climate control. In all gyms we include an ample number of skylights and windows to reduce the need for lighting during the day. We have installed computerized lighting controllers attached to photocells and induction high bay light fixtures to reduce electrical consumption. In Portland we have installed CO2 sensors so that our ventilation systems only turn on when we need fresh air in the building.
