Climbing FAQ

What's this about a waiver?

All participants need to fill out a waiver and bring a government issued photo identification. The waiver is the most important piece of information. Minors must have a waiver filled out by a parent or legal guardian. If the parent or legal guardian is unable to accompany the child, we must receive a photocopy of the signing parent/legal guardian’s government issued photo ID. Legal guardians must bring proof of their guardianship.

I've never done this before! What do I need to know?

Climbing is really easy to try out and is fun for all ages! Click HERE To plan your visit!

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing. We rent all the equipment needed for climbing in our facility. Kids can wear athletic shoes on the wall. Helmets are always available free of charge. In addition, each facility is equipped with lockers, a sauna, showers and restrooms. We provide a complimentary towel service.

Do I need to know how to manage the ropes (belay)?

There are two types of climbing: route climbing, which requires the use of a rope and a person who can manage the rope and bouldering. Bouldering does not require any previous knowledge, and our staff are more than willing to teach you about bouldering. If you would like to climb on our roped walls, you will need a Planet Granite-approved belayer who knows how to belay.

I want to climb with a rope on the tall wall routes. How do I do that?

If you have not belayed before, you’ll need to reserve a spot in our Belay Lessons, which teach you to manage the ropes! These classes are offered at specific times, and we strongly recommend a reservation as classes fill up quickly! To find out times, click on your gym here:

What if I know how to belay already?

That’s great! We do require a Planet Granite belay card, which you can get anytime during our business hours. If you are coming with a group of people and plan on belaying for them, we would highly recommend coming in on an earlier day to ensure you can belay for your friends.

Is there someone on your staff who can belay for me or my child?

We do not have extra staff available for drop in climbing, however you can always call in advance and set up a private lesson. Some of our locations offer drop-in climbing on the weekends, check out San Francisco and Belmont for more details.

Can I drop off my child for a couple hours?

Parents are responsible for their child’s safety. We do not recommend this and are not responsible for watching your child.
