Every November for over 10 years, Planet Granite has hosted an exciting HelpHopeLive Benefit in honor of Stacey Collver, called the Mt. Everest Climb-a-thon. This year’s Climb-a-thon will be at Planet Granite Sunnyvale on November 6, 12:30pm – 3:30pm.

About Stacey

For those of you who don’t know, Stacey has been an integral part of the Bay Area’s climbing community for 20 years. She managed Twisters Climbing Gym, coached a youth team and founded the Bay Area chapter of SheClimbs, now led by Nicole Belle-Isle.

One of her young athletes was Josh Levin. Josh grew up to become a professional climber, and recently he was a finalist on Season 8 of the American Ninja Warrior show. He dedicated his run to Stacey, his first climbing coach, and spoke of how she influenced his life.

On August 3, 2003, Stacey was diagnosed with a rare lung disease called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). She received a life saving double lung transplant in 2004, thanks to a generous organ donation. Nearly 12 years later, she is now in chronic rejection and her lung function has dropped to 27%. She has been on the Stanford lung transplant waiting list for almost 2 years

How can You Help?

To participate, you can either climb at Planet Granite Sunnyvale the day of the event; make a donation and be a “virtual climber”; or you can support a friend by sponsoring their climbing. The suggested donation is $25, but additional funds are very much appreciated.

After obtaining sponsors, climbers will meet at PG Sunnyvale to climb as many vertical feet as possible in 2 hours. All the scores will be added together to see if everyone made their collective goal of 29,035 feet, the height of Mt. Everest! Those who raise over $100.00 will receive a T-shirt.

There will also be a Silent Auction on the day of the benefit. Among the many terrific items, autographed copies of Climbing Free: My Life in the Vertical World by climbing pioneer Lynn Hill, and On the Nose: A Lifelong Obsession With Yosemite’s Most Iconic Climb by Hans Florine and Jaimie Moye. Other items include: a Petzl Women’s harness, a climbing helmet, an Osprey women’s backpack, Mad Rock climbing shoes, chalk pots, and chalk bags. The grand prize is a 3-day stay at the Yosemite home of Hans Florine, who is known for his speed climbing records on the Nose route. At the Silent Auction and raffle, you must be present to win!

All funds are used to offset Stacey’s increasing medical expenses which are well over $1500/month. Donations are tax-deductible, and some employers will even match your charitable donation.
