about me

phone: (503) 481-8248
email: mhopkins.training@gmail.com

Having played practically every sport offered in school as a child, Matt was a natural born athlete who thrived at physical activities. But, it wasn’t until he was seven years old that he truly found his passion – in climbing. Quickly excelling in the sport, Matt competed and regularly placed in youth climbing competitions around the U.S., in both bouldering and lead climbing.

Having immersed himself in the competitive climbing arena, Matt was exposed to many coaching techniques and a variety of specialists. Through a combination of personal experience and a personal desire to push harder and crush more routes without injury, Matt naturally made the transition to personal training, becoming an ACE certified Personal Trainer. Matt specializes in working with climbers who want to learn the basic fundamentals of climbing to those trying to push pass their climbing plateaus, with especial focus on preventing injuries,
harnessing power, increasing endurance, and bolstering technique.

Matt started his fitness career to help climbers avoid injuries but also to help them recover from them, all while getting stronger. Whether it be running down Burnside or summiting El Capitan, staying active is a lifestyle and Matt is excited to assist you in achieving your personal training goals.

Doug

Personal Trainer

About Me

As the heavy kid in high school weighing in at 250 lbs with a 38 waist his senior year- Doug’s fitness journey began when he started playing rugby at San Diego State University. After a few surgeries and countless hours in the training room, Doug changed his major from International Business to Exercise Nutritional Sciences with an emphasis in Sports Medicine. During this time a close friend of his passed away from leukemia and he vowed to honor her by doing an Ironman triathlon and raising $10K for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He’s now completed 4 Ironman triathlons, 3 Chicago Marathons (4 by 10/8/17), and 4 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlons to name a few. Doug understands how difficult establishing the habit of fitness can be and applies empathy as one of his key tenants of coaching.

Having held various roles in Orthopedics, Human Performance and Health and Wellness – Doug approaches training and exercise with a scientific lens and the simple goal of making people better. As a TRX Senior Master Instructor since 2008, Doug has been fortunate to coach all levels, from Pros to Janes and Joes. Now working full time in Technology, Doug considers himself fortunate to maintain his passion for fitness and coaching as an instructor at Planet Granite. Chances are you’ll likely never see him climbing but he’s always around so feel free to say hi.
