Just as the stucco dried on our new bouldering area, Planet Granite’s Bloc Party returned to Sunnyvale for the 3rd year in a row. This is the first time we’ve held an overall Series Final in our three part Bloc Party competition, and it was not to be taken lightly. People from all three Planet Granite locations came to rep their sport and showcase their skills.  With over 300 competitors, this was our largest comp yet, but the crowds didn’t scare away the psyche or the fun.

Semi-pro climbers didn’t hesitate to share beta with fresh off the couch competitors, and not a frown could be found as the energy level progressed throughout the night.  Even some of Planet Granite’s Youth Climbing Team made the scene. These young senders put it down, and one happy mother stated “Climbing is a sport my son can take seriously”.  Might there be potential for a Planet Granite Grom Search in the future? Who knows, but I can tell you to focus on upping your stats because these young climbers are hot on your heels!

“Come to Planet Granite and get tough, I dare ya” our route setter/DJ Joel said as the competition really started to heat up. Shifting gears to the Dyno Comp, bystanders crowded around to watch people launch themselves as high as they could on a challenging overhanging wall. Competitors pitched in donations to support the Access Fund and to secure and maintain the Bay Area’s local sport crag, Jailhouse Rock.  At one buck for 3 dynos, it’s pretty incredible we were able to raise $75 in less than 30 minutes!  And the crowd’s cheers were muffled only slightly by the pizza and beer that were being rapidly consumed.

In the end, we all came to watch the people who were competing for CASH PRIZES up to $150 and a chance at winning the Series Final.  Everyone piled into the new outdoor bouldering area, and the top competitors were given five minutes to complete each of the three problems. They all brought their best game, but a winner had to be decided.
