Summit Rock

The County of Santa Clara, California has closed Summit Rock, a popular crag in the Bay Area to protect peregrine falcons nesting. Summit Rock features easy access, high quality sandstone, and a wide range of difficulty, including moderate routes for youth and beginners. Instead of implementing a seasonal climbing closure to protect the nesting site, the County is enforcing a year round closure. Summit Rock is the only year-round raptor-related climbing closure in the nation.

The Access Fund needs our help to encourage the County to lift this unreasonable closure and work with the climbing community to implement appropriate climbing management practices that protect the nesting raptors while still allowing recreational access.

Planet Granite has committed to matching up to $1,000 of funds raised* to help bring out a Peregrine expert who can assess the site to determine if a crag-wide closure is necessary or if we can open up climbing seasonally.

Join us at Planet Granite Sunnyvale on Thursday, November 3rd at 8pm for a slideshow presentation and fundraiser!
Doug Robinson, a Bay Area Native who’s first climbing experience was at Summit Rock back in October 1958, will be speaking about the early climbing days and his grand adventures in the High Sierra. Doug has written extensively for publications such as Climbing Magazine, Rock and Ice, Ascent (see the current issue), and Alpinist.

Doug’s article in the 1972 Chouinard Equipment Catalogue (the company known today as Black Diamond), “The Whole Art of Natural Protection,” is considered the cornerstone of what has become the clean climbing movement. In 1974 he was featured in a National Geographic cover story about the first “clean” ascent of Half Dome with Galen Rowell and Dennis Henneck. In the High Sierra, Doug has numerous noteworthy first ascents including Ice Nine and Dark Star. For nearly 40 years, Doug has been an outspoken voice of environmentally conscious, low impact climbing.
