Climbing Team

The Planet Granite Youth Climbing Teams are ongoing, year-round programs designed for kids who are ready to take the next step in climbing. Our teams foster a love of both climbing and the mental and physical challenges climbing can present. Our curriculum focuses on advancing technical skill and increasing physical conditioning while maintaining a cooperative environment fueled by the support of fellow team members. Kids are placed in one of three teams: Intermediate, Intermediate/Advanced and Competitive.

CLIMBING TEAM

Introductory Team

A once-a-week team for athletes with some climbing experience, who are hooked and want to learn more about climbing and the climbing community. This team introduces athletes to our team culture and community, teaches basic climbing skills, and helps athletes feel comfortable and excited to train with their peers. No competition participation required.

Various sessions available per location.
Price: $160/month (membership included)
Ages: 6-18
Prerequisites: Climbing Club or equivalent experience strongly recommended. Application and successful tryout is required. Contact Head Coach Emma Goldhoff for application.

VERY IMPORTANT!

Waiver

Every visitor to Planet Granite must complete the liability waiver AND present a government-issued photo ID card within 30 days of completing the waiver. For minors under 18 years of age, the liability waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian*. If the parent or guardian will not be present, please bring a photocopy of the adult’s government-issued photo ID for signature verification. *Please note: legal guardians must present proof of guardianship to sign a child’s waiver.

Intermediate Team

The Intermediate Team program is designed for younger children who have already developed a passion for the sport, have a strong desire to improve, and are ready to start working hard! Our curriculum covers everything from basic footwork and body positions to dynamic motion and projecting. Technique lessons are then reinforced with climbing drills and on the wall climbing games. The Intermediate Team program emphasizes establishing a solid foundation of basic technique, as well as a focus on conditioning, including basic cross-training strength drills such as pushups, pull-ups and core exercises.

Planet Granite coaches encourage all of the climbers who try out and make the team to compete in the regional Youth Climbing League.

“Tryouts aren’t to weed people out. For me, it’s more about their willingness to work and listen than how strong they are,” says Sunnyvale Head Coach Isaac Williams. “We don’t turn kids down because they’re not strong enough. Once they’re on the team, they get stronger really, really fast.”

Intermediate & Advanced

Planet Granite’s climbing team focuses on building self-confidence and rock climbing skills through hard work and team support. Coaches emphasize the fundamentals of climbing and fitness in a fun and relaxed environment. Team workouts focus on balance, movement, strength training, communication, and mental strategy.

“Climbing appeals to people who wouldn’t want to be in another sport,” says program founder Isaac Williams. “You’re really competing against yourself. That appeals to a different type of kid.”

Prices for Team include expert coaching, full access to the gym and free rental gear on Team days. Intermediate and Advanced teams are open to kids ages 11-18—younger climbers should check out our After School Programs or Rock Monkeys.

Our Intermediate Team is the next step for casual kid climbers who want to learn more. In this program, team kids hone skills or learn them if they are newer to the sport of climbing. During practices, team kids will learn a technique or skill, and then will participate in climbing drills that help them understand and retain the knowledge. Practices will often include a short workout involving a series of push, pull and core exercises and harder climbing workouts that build on the techniques they have learned.

The Advanced Team is focused on training for competitions and personal climbing goals. Climbers concentrate on lead climbing skills, advanced technique, fitness training, and mental preparation. Advanced team members join upon coaches’ invitation and must be belay-certified. (Belay certification depends on coach approval for climbers younger than 14.)

“Rock climbing is wonderful because it’s a combination of self-reliance and a team environment,” says Belmont Head Coach Sasha Schwartz.

We encourage all of our team climbers to compete in the regional Youth Climbing League. Some team members also compete in the challenging national Bouldering Series and Sport Climbing Series.

Competitive Team

The Competitive Team is for dedicated and experienced climbers who are prepared to condition themselves specifically for the sport of climbing. While training and drills are geared towards competition style climbing movement, climbers should have a firm grasp on both basic and advanced technique. Participants are expected to work hard, show discipline, responsibility and maturity often beyond their age. This team attends local, regional, divisional and national level competitions through the country held by USA Climbing.

Our team is elite: Planet Granite’s team has sent 14 or 15 qualifying competitors to USA Climbing national competitions each year in the past few years, out of a total pool of around 340 who compete at the event. A number of members have joined the U.S. Team, which means a top-four finish at Nationals. Team members can compete in USA Climbing’s Bouldering Series and Sport Climbing Series.

TEAM FAQ

CAN MY CHILD JOIN TEAM?

Team is for youth ages 8-18. We ask that your child have the desire, passion and dedication to excel at climbing. All candidates are asked to meet with the Head Coach for an assessment. Please email to set this up.

We may have a long waitlist of climbers looking to get onto the team, so here are a few things that you should know to help get you on the waitlist and decide if team is right for your climber:

  • Our team typically runs at capacity so our waitlist can move slowly
  • On average we open 5-10 spots a year per gym
  • We ask that climbers who are looking to join team are able to climb at least 5.10a/b (without weighting the rope)
  • If interested in getting your climber on the waitlist, please email the head coach with the following information:
    • Name of climber
    • Age of climber
    • Climbing experience (indoor and outdoor)

IS MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED?

Yes! Membership is included as a benefit for kids who take part in team.

I AM A MEMBER, DO I GET A DISCOUNT?

The cost of team covers the coaching and team practices, and a membership is included as a benefit. Team dues are not discounted further if your child is already a member, is part of a family membreship, or does not want a membership.

CAN I FREEZE MY TEAM MEMBERSHIP?

Yes! Since the team meets year round, we understand that there will be times, either due to other sports or vacation, that you will want to place your team membership on hold. Team memberships are treated similarly to our regular monthly memberships; we can freeze or cancel your membership. Freezes must start on the 1st of the month, and cancels are effective on the last day of the month. Please email the head coach, Jesse to freeze your membership.

WHAT'S IS THE PARENT'S ROLE IN TEAM?

Every participant and coach is choosing to be part of a team with a common mission to develop high performing climbing athletes in a way that emphasizes fun, fosters a love of the sport, and supports each team member’s personal development and growth. The Code of Conduct spells out the manner in which we’ll achieve the team’s mission and lays out expectations for both coaches and team members. If at any time a parent, coach, or team member has a concern about the well being of a team member, we encourage them to reach out to the Youth Protection Committee.
