On your first visit to Planet Granite there are a couple of things you will need to do before you climb.
Complete a liability waiver AND present a government issued photo ID card.
For participants under 18 years of age…Please be sure that all minors have a WAIVER fully completed and signed by their parents or legal guardian.
If the parent or guardian will not be present, please bring a photocopy of their government issued photo identification (for signature verification) Please note: legal guardians must present proof of guardianship to sign a child’s waiver. Experienced climbers. Must take a belay test. Those new to Planet Granite or returning members/guests who have not been in the facility for one year or more have to take a belay test. This is what lets you belay in our gyms!

You’re ready to climb!
How gym climbing works: There are two main types of gym climbing: bouldering and roped climbing.
Bouldering is climbing done on relatively low rocks, or “boulders.” Climbers who boulder don’t use ropes because the top of the bouldering routes are low enough for climbers to jump down. That said, remember that some of the boulders in our gyms are very tall (18 feet) so be careful about what you decide to climb. Only climb as high as you are comfortable.
Bouldering is a great way for climbers to hone their climbing skills and build strength. You do not need a climbing partner when you are bouldering, but can always find a fun group of people and a great bouldering community.
The second type of climbing you will find in gyms is roped climbing. To climb the tall walls, climbers must tie into a climbing rope and have a climbing partner on the ground managing the rope. This rope management is called “belaying”.
Every roped climber in our facilities needs a Planet Granite certified belayer managing his or her rope. New climbers who come to the gym with a certified belayer can try roped climbing without gym staff instruction, but they cannot belay.
New climbers with no belaying experience must take the Belay Lesson (schedule here) or Beginner Rock Climbing Course (schedule here) to learn rope management. Do you have prior belay experience? Great! You still need to take a belay test in order to belay at Planet Granite. Lead climbing and lead belaying require a separate lead test.
Kids are natural born climbers. At Planet Granite, we have developed a number of programs that allow kids to experience the benefits of climbing.
Our most popular kids’ event is birthday parties. If this will be both you and your child’s first time at Planet Granite, we recommend reserving a spot in our Parent/Child Belay Lessons. This lesson teaches you, the parent, how to manage the ropes for your child!
Other options to consider are our After School Programs, Winter, Spring and Summer Camps and Parents’ Night Off. Your child can climb during our drop-in climbing, where a staff member belays them and other children. Or if they’d like to climb non-stop with a staffer belaying, we are always happy to provide a private belayer for your child, please contact us at (415) 692-3434 for more information.

Our Intro to Climbing lesson ($30) is an essential first step when starting out climbing. This one hour class teaches students how to belay (manage the ropes for a person climbing) and comes with gear and a day pass to continue climbing after your class!
Plus, with every Intro to Climbing Lesson, you have the option to purchase a one-time 15 day access pass to our gym for just $30. Looking for something more in-depth? We offer our Beginner Rock Climbing Course (BRC). This 4-week course starts with learning to belay, an continues into climbing movement and technique. The BRC includes 4 classes (once per week), 4 weeks of access to our gym, free gear rentals and FREE initiation if you decide to join.
Must be 14 or older to enroll in classes.

All participants need to fill out a waiver and bring a government issued photo identification. The waiver is the most important piece of information. If the parent or legal guardian is unable to accompany the child, we must receive a photocopy of the signing parent/legal guardian’s government issued photo ID. Legal guardians must bring proof of their guardianship.

Welcome! Wear comfortable, loose clothing. We rent all the equipment needed for climbing in our facility. Kids can wear athletic shoes on the wall. Helmets are always available free of charge. In addition, each facility is equipped with lockers, a sauna, showers and restrooms. We provide a complimentary towel service.
As described in About Climbing, there are two types of climbing: high climbing, which requires the use of a rope and a person who can manage the rope and bouldering. Bouldering does not require any previous knowledge, and our staff are more than willing to teach you about bouldering.
If you have not belayed before, you’ll need to reserve a spot in our Belay Lessons, which teach you to manage the ropes! These classes are offered at specific times, and we strongly recommend a reservation as classes fill up quickly! To find out times, click here:
That’s great! We do require a Planet Granite belay card, which you can get anytime during our business hours. If you are coming with a group of people and plan on belaying for them, we would highly recommend coming in on an earlier day to ensure you can belay for your friends.
We do not maintain extra staff to belay, however, you can always call in advance and set up a “Private Belayer” and our staff would be more than happy to help out. Please call your local Planet Granite for pricing information. Reservations required.
Parents are responsible for their child’s safety. We do not recommend this and are not responsible for watching your child.
You now have with the skills to come back to our facility and climb, but first you need to take the belay test. This is a short test that reviews your belay skills. Belay tests are available anytime during business hours free of charge.
Don’t forget every minor needs a completed waiver!

If you’re frustrated by a project, this class can help, whether you’re pushing for a sustained powerful route or an epic 12-move boulder odyssey. Power and Endurance has two three-week modules to improve your explosive power and help you break through an endurance plateau.
The program can be taken multiple times and is customized to each participant’s abilities. The curriculum focuses on adapting training to your personal needs, whether you are a newer climber who is looking to push harder, or an advanced climber seeking to hone strength.
Please note, this is not a technique class. Students are highly encouraged to have a basic background in Balance & Technique and meet the prerequisite climbing level. This training addresses falling directly to help improve commitment. We do progressive falling practice, followed by movement, breathing, resting, and body/mind awareness exercises. Finally, students apply everything to a goal route. Students leave understanding how to take appropriate risks, reduce fear, and how to commit to those risks.

Everyone can get better at rock climbing. The nature of the sport is to progress, push our bodies, get fitter and enjoy the action. Maybe you have hit a plateau or you’ve been slowed by minor injuries or maybe you simply don’t have the time to focus as much energy as you would like? I can help you!
I began climbing as a child in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland. Over the years I have specialized in all aspects of the sport from bold 5.13 trad routes and V13 boulders to climbing first ascents on remote alpine big walls.
Having trained and climbed alongside some of the world’s best climbers over the last two decades I have created a coaching and training system that is extremely personalized and athlete specific. It incorporates many subtle variables leading to success in the sport from a technical, physical and mental perspective. Climbing is a relatively young sport with limited resources. Time and time again I see a pattern of chronically plateaued and/or injured climbers. I use a structured approach based on sport science and technical coaching to overcome these common problems.
I work with clients of all levels from those just getting started and climbing 5.5 right through to those trying to climb their first V13 or 5.13. My approach incorporates not only instruction but encourages discussion regarding physiological ‘cause and effect.’ I want my athletes to understand not only ‘how we train’ but also ‘why we train in this particular way’ – leading to more educated climbers who can develop the techniques to not only push themselves in the future but to do so in a fun and sustainable manner.
