Yoga is a time-honored means to wellness. It delivers increased flexibility, improves stability, and works to fine-tune and strengthen the body. Beyond those physical benefits, it also promotes calm and peace.

At Planet Granite, our climbing-savvy yogis have trained under great teachers including Rusty Wells, Rod Stryker, and Shiva Rea. Drop-in on morning classes start at $22, or better yet, get unlimited yoga as part of a membership package!

Yoga classes are offered daily, from early morning classes for the perfect wake-up to evening sessions to close out your day. Whether you’re looking to find your breath and release from your busy day or get a workout, we offer a variety of classes to meet your needs!

New To Yoga

Our classes are open to all levels of yoga students. Try a couple of different styles and instructors to see what suits your needs best, but a good class to start with is Yoga Foundations (Sunnyvale or San Francisco) or Foundations of Flow (Belmont) classes. Please arrive early and let the instructor know that you’re new to yoga. Always be sure to let him/her know if you are working with injuries or special conditions. Listen to the instructions that the teacher explains during each pose to make sure your body is in the right position; often the instructor will describe modifications to the pose for beginners. Most importantly, remember to breathe and to have fun!

What do I bring and/or wear?

Wear comfortable, stretchy workout clothing that allows you to move freely. You’ll need a yoga mat and a towel. We rent mats at the front desk for $1 and towels are available in the studio. Please bring a lock if you would like to use our complimentary lockers.

Why should I practice yoga?

A yoga practice will increase your flexibility and tone your muscles. It promotes cardio and circulatory health, improved balance and better posture. Yoga also teaches you how to quiet the mind and bring focus to where you want your energy to go….whether it’s a yoga practice, a hard route you want to climb or a difficult day at the office! It’s a perfect complement to your climbing and fitness programs. Planet Granite offers all three with one membership!

How long are the classes?

Our yoga classes are generally 75-90 minutes long. Weekday noon classes are 60-75 minutes. If you need to leave early from a class, please let your instructor know before class. In addition, if there is a class ahead of you, please wait to enter the room until the instructor has opened the door. Please check your local gym’s schedule for specific times.

Why are some classes heated?

Warm muscles are more elastic and less susceptible to injury. A heated room makes it easier to warm up and obtain a better range of motion during class.

What should I not bring to Yoga?

As breathing is a very important part of yoga, we ask you to please refrain from wearing strong perfumes or products in class. In addition, if you are having trouble breathing (congestion, sniffles, coughs), your body might be telling you to rest and heal. It might be best if you wait until the next class.  Please do not bring cell phones to class.

Is Yoga Foundations for me?

If it’s your first class or you are fairly new to yoga this is the place to start! In this class, you will learn the basic tools to build a progressive practice over time. If you are an advanced student, this class will allow you to explore the finer subtleties of each pose. It’s an opportunity to remove some of the old habits that prevent you from moving on into deeper more advanced postures. Each class will build on something different, from sun salutations to cobra pose and even abdominals, breaking down the movement so that each student learns proper form and alignment. Stick with this class and you will slowly build strength and a “foundation” on which to build your practice.

Styles

Foundations of Flow

Great for beginning and experienced students alike, this class is designed to give you a language and an understanding of the practice(s) of Yoga. Not specifically an easy class, it is designed to get you feeling stable, balanced, at ease and accomplished in your practice. This class is good for those new to yoga or students looking to fine-tune their practice.

Power

A fast-paced class in which the sequence of poses changes with each class. Poses flow from one to the next for a strengthening and calorie-burning workout. This is a challenging class that is open to all levels of students. If you’re new to Power it may take a few times, but you’ll soon catch on to the basics!

Restorative Yoga

Restoratives are meditative poses in which the body is supported with props and held for extended periods of time. Recent neurological research shows that 20 minutes in a well supported restorative pose is equal to 2 hours worth of good sleep in terms of brainwave activity and cell regeneration. From this still place, the body is more able to access its natural ability to cleanse, heal, rest, sleep, grow, and build immunities. Restorative Yoga is open to all levels of students.

Vinyasa Flow

An evolving form of Hatha yoga, this style focuses on integrating breath and movement through steady and fluid asana sequences called Vinyasa. Vinyasa flow is a dynamic and flowing yoga practice. It synchronizes breath and movement using Sun Salutations to connect poses.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga opens up the deep, dense, connective tissues and joints of the body which are not often reached in an active yang yoga class. Each class offers a series of poses held for a considerable length of time to allow for complete and passive release. The mind and body are given a chance to relax and unwind. This class is appropriate for students interested in increasing flexibility, releasing tension and preparing the body for longer periods of seated meditation.

about me

Jillian is an E-RYT 500, Director of the Bindu Yoga Teacher Training school, and the Yoga Program Manager at Planet Granite. IN 2011 Jillian was initiated into the Sri Vidya lineage by Yogarupa Rod Stryker and is a senior ParaYoga teacher as well.

In her classes you will experience a modern narrative on the intimate conversation between breath, body and mind, while exploring Tantra hatha techniques of asana, kryia, pranayama, mudra, mantra and meditation. The combination of tantra techniques, intelligent sequencing and relevant narrative are used to create very specific energetic effects.

Her classes always yield a logical progression, periods of challenge, and release into ease and stillness at the end. Students are led with verbal cues and hands on adjustments into safe alignment while deepening their practice. Her narrative takes the mystery out of yoga and allows all levels of students to experience the practice with intensity, humor, grace and joy.

background
After graduating from Tufts University in Massachusetts with a degree in International Relations, I continued my studies in academia and received my Masters in Mass Communications. However, as I journey through life I realize that practicing and teaching yoga fulfilled me much more than any other path. Yoga has changed my life, and I find great inspiration from my own practice and from my students. I began practicing yoga in 1996. I have studied extensively at Foothill College with Ben Thomas, a Senior Certified Iyengar teacher with over 30 years of experience. I received my teaching certificate in 2004. Recently, I had the opportunity to study in San Francisco with globally renowned restorative teacher, Judith Lasater at the Iyengar Institute in San Francisco and received my restorative teacher certification. I continue to study with Ben Thomas at Foothill College and attend yoga workshops throughout the state because I believe in the importance of knowledge and staying “fresh” in the discipline of yoga.

philosophy
Just be.

teaching style
I tend to draw upon many styles of yoga as I believe there is only one yoga and each style of yoga brings new understanding to the yogic path. I try to tune into the needs of each student whether it is building strength and flexibility or becoming more self aware in their own practice. I focus on alignment, infusing balance and creating space with each asana as, I consider, most injuries are caused by either being misaligned, out of balance or from a lack of space.

Ashley Van Dyne

Yoga Instructor
BIO

Ashley Van Dyne

Yoga Instructor

about me

Ashley Van Dyne first came to yoga as a way to bring more balance to my climbing, usually as a “rest day” activity. Like so many who start a regular yoga practice, she found more strength and flexibility and soon began to marvel at the shift in energy and mental state that would take place after a class. It didn’t take long before she began to notice that the benefits of yoga extend far beyond the practice that you do on your mat. She began to discover that through asana, breath, and concentration that the mind can be calmed, and that beneath all that chatter is the true nature of the self.

As this space is accessed, the possibility for some amazing transformations exists. She is continually amazed by the layers and depth to yoga and love that she has the opportunity to guide others into this discovery. She believes that yoga can benefit everyone, and she strives to meet students where they are in their practice. Whether you have just started to explore the physical aspects of yoga, or have begun to delve into the mental and energetic possibilities of a practice, it is her hope to create a space for each student to explore yoga for themselves. The classes that she teaches tend towards a strong vinyasa flow style where breath is emphasized to bring about the body-mind connection.

The physical challenge of asana is often used as a tool to explore the reaction and fluctuations of the mind. She believes that it is in these observations that the real transformations of yoga take place. When she is not teaching yoga, you can usually find her in the bouldering area of PG pursuing her other passion. Ashley is a certified yoga teacher at the RYT 200Hr level.
